CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

The significance of family cannot be denied by anyone; however, the core of family is mostly interpreted in terms of parental authority over the rebellious youngsters. This method is no adequate to a detailed understanding of the Christian family life. The role of family in the Christian education needs to be taken beyond the level of pious and general affirmation to its significance. It is stated in 1 Timothy that

“But anyone who won't care for his own relatives when they need help, especially those living in his own family, has no right to say he is a Christian. Such a person is worse than the heathen”

The Christians affirm the absolute importance of family to the nurture of children, but the Christians are confronted with a general decline in the family life. The structure of the family and the concept of permanent relationship are giving ways to moral and social changes including easy divorce, sexual promiscuity, free love, and communal experimentation. Therefore, the aim of Christian values and therapy is to establish the common goal of a greater good of the family . The metaphor “family” is often used for the church, the community of faith. Westerhoff emphasizes the role of the community of body of Christ paradigm. He underscores the community of faith, commenting “we are persons in relationship with God and others, a totally dependent relationship with God and an interdependent relationship with others.” All humanity belongs to the household of God. All of them together make up the whole body of Christ. Westerhoff emphasizes the nature and character of the church as a community of faith . Anthony Reddie also claims that cross-generational connectedness gives young people a valuable basis for their wisdom formation and hope. According to Westerhoff, church education calls for the intentionality and responsibility of the whole congregation. He suggests the true community of faith: “the community of faith can only be nurtured within the self-conscious intentional community of faith; the community of faith must be small enough for meaningful, purposeful interactions among its members; there are the necessities of presence and interaction of generations; and the community of faith, in addition, unites all those roles .” Foster identifies the faith community with the context and agency of teaching. He reflects on his own Christian education experience.

Undoubtedly, Jesus came from a fine family. One may call them normal but it cannot be referred to as conventional. In the biblical stories, one finds Mary questioning the angel of God and them accepting the vocation to be the mother before she has a husband ...
