Exceptionalities

Introduction

The term exceptionality refers to any situation or condition that significantly interferes with children's ability to learn in society and school. There are many conditions of exceptionality for example mental or physical condition or social condition. Children with exceptionalities have special and unique needs and wants in relation to school and societal norms. It is quite certain to say that a child with exceptionality has some features and areas of functioning that differentiates him/her significantly from the established and universal norms. This term includes both children with special talents or gifts and disabilities. If a child does not comply with the universal norms he/she is either termed as gifted or talented or developmentally disabled or mentally retarded.

Discussion

The attitude and behavior of a teacher dealing with or of a parent having an exceptional child is not same, as the attitude and behavior they have towards a normal child. In earlier days children with exceptionalities were treated differently for example there were separate schools for exceptional children , however now a days this discrimination has been stopped by including exceptional children with the mainstream and normal children (Winstanley, 2004). It is also very evident that in retrospect students with disabilities were not allowed to attend the school of normal students however with awareness and changes in policies, this scenario has been evolved and schools have started welcoming all kinds of students with a common believe that all human beings have some strengths and weaknesses.

Since in this essay we will be discussing very young exceptional children, so there is another concern surrounds this matter. Parents and the teacher both have to be very careful while dealing with an developmentally disabled child for example if the child goes to school he/she should be sent with an extra diaper as these kids do not often inform when they have to go to the toilet, extra medication, clothes and a person who is closely familiar with the habits of the child should be with the child at all times. This often becomes a challenge for many teachers, as they all of them do not have expertise in dealing with an exceptional child. This has resulted in a new department o teaching and many teachers peruse a career in this field of education.

A day for an exceptional child is not an easy day for example a mother, who has a 7 year old son, and the son is exceptionally smart and intelligent but he is handicapped. This often hinders with the lifestyle of the child as being handicapped and hampered by a wheel chair, many locations and places become inaccessible for the child (Pullen .et.al, 2008).

There are several chances of that child to become a victim of depression as sadness prevails when he goes to school on a wheel chair and see other kids plays sports, this often makes the child sad and depressed. The mother has to make sure that their son does not get affected by such ...
