Introduction

This paper intends to explore the work and contribution of Langston Hughes to the literature. Further, it examines the work of “Father and Son” by Langston Hughes and makes the critical analysis about the tale. In addition to this, it discusses about the Harlem Renaissance and the black movement that was a result due to racism of black and white people.

Langston Hughes was a poet based in America. He was not only a poet but a communist, as well. He was termed as an innovator of the new literary art form called jazz poetry. Langston is best known during Harlem Renaissance. Langston had a huge contribution towards the Harlem Renaissance and his poetic contribution highlighted the feelings, strength, culture and the creativity of the African-American community. Langston's contribution towards the Harlem Renaissance was tremendous. After the great depression, the African-American community was in a devastating situation as compared to any community residing in the country. Hughes then wrote, “Harlem” in the year of 1951. He wrote it after 20 years of the great depression. He also highlighted the devastating situation that the African-Americans are going though after the First World War. Post the First World War, The whites fled to cities, which were in, a better condition and the African-Americans were highly unwelcomed in such cities. They were left in cities that were in a deteriorating condition (poetryfoundation.org).

Discussion

Langston states that the inhuman approach existing in the US way before the 1960's when the civil right movement occurred, African American were deemed no importance at all. Their dreams and goals were considered to be of no importance and were consequently ignored. They were forcibly resisted.
