FINGERPRINT BIOMETRICS

Fingerprint Biometric Security Technology: Problem or Solution

Abstract

Biometrics has been introduced as an identification technology which is use to detect objects on the basis of their features and essential characteristics. Biometric technology can be broadly categorized into Physical and Behavioral identification technique. Since, It is obvious from name, Physical Identification is based on the physical characteristics of individuals, including DNA, fingerprints, iris, and retina etc. on the other hand, Behavioral Identification is the technology which detects individual on the basis of its behavior such as typing speed or voice. There are many biometric techniques available today. They key among these techniques will be discussed in this paper i.e. fingerprint detection using biometric technology. Finger print authentication technique is a method of verifying similarity between the finger prints in the record and fingerprint of the person under investigation. This technique makes use of ridge patterns on the human fingers. Finger print recognition technique is nowadays widely used in organizations due to the number of advantages it offers. It has high accuracy, and the emergence of electronic sensors means that the devices nowadays are compact therefore less space is required. The fact that thieves usually leave their fingerprints on the crime scene makes it suitable in government and law enforcing agencies. Today, when there is increasing number of cases of network security issues or online theft of data have been witnessed, it is now necessary to make use of safe recognition techniques for authorization. Traditionally, this technology was only available in government or law enforcing agencies. But today, there are advance systems with reliable cost and therefore this method is also being used in personal level applications. However, there are number of challenges and problems associated with this technique, but implementation of secure protocols would help mitigate those problems. Hence, this report will concentrate on the methods, technologies, limitations, trends, social and ethical issues related to finger print recognition to analyze whether it a problem or a solution.

Fingerprint Biometric Security Technology: Problem or Solution

Introduction

Biometrics is a form of identification technique which is use to identify individual on the basis of their characteristics. Biometric identification technique is usually classified as Physical and Behavioral identification technique (Lourde & Khosla, 2010). Physical Identification is defined as identification of Human on the basis of physical attributes for example finger prints and DNA tests. Behavioral Identification is the identification on the basis of human behavior such as typing speed or voice (Singla, 2013). The technique of biometric which will be covered in this report is Finger Print Recognition. This report will concentrate on the methods, technologies, limitations, trends, Social and Ethical issues related to finger print recognition will be also analyzed in this paper to conclude that whether this biometric technology is a problem or ...
