ABSTRACT

Women have always influenced the American political scenario. The highest position a women can assume is that of the First Lady. Right from the inception of this post, the First Ladies have played a pivotal in shaping and influencing the political and social fabric of the American society. Keeping in view, this fact, this dissertation provides an in-depth analysis and comparison of leadership skills possessed by two of the most influential First Ladies in America; namely, Dolley Madison and Eleanor Roosevelt. The first chapter provides an introduction to the topic, followed by relevant literature review in the second chapter. The third chapter covers the methodology section. In this paper, the researcher has used qualitative research approach. The findings are presented in the fourth chapter, followed by the fifth chapter that concludes the dissertation, providing with implications and needs for further research on this topic.

Background of the study

The story of female political power unfolds in a larger context of growth-the development of a capital city and a federal political structure. A study of women's political agency could have been set in any of the larger, more established cities of the new United States, like Boston, Philadelphia or Charleston. Focusing on Washington City, however, provides a unique perspective, for only rarely can a city be studied from its inception (William, 69).

The roles of the First Ladies have been as varied as the women who have held the position. For Jacqueline Kennedy assuming the role of First Lady provided a vocation of introducing the American people to a sense of culture and the arts. Her role's culmination was chronicled in the historic restoration of the White House. For Ladybird Johnson, the role of First Lady continues to be associated with the wildflower beautification program on national highways (Pflueger, 14).

Most recently, with the inauguration of Bill Clinton into the presidency, Hillary Clinton championed the cause of national health reform. Most First Ladies have had to create a niche for themselves.
