FLUTICASONE

Fluticasone

Introduction

Respiratory diseases or Lungs disorder is broadly differentiated into obstructive lungs disease and seasonal allergic rhinitis. The diseases mentioned earlier are characterized by the existence of an obstruction of the airways, which is usually progressive and generally irreversible in nature; inflammation in the upper torso; and problems pertaining to breathing. Obstructive lungs disease is further categorized into Asthma, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchiectasis, and bronchitis; whereas seasonal allergic rhinitis includes hay fever and perennial rhinitis.

The aim of this paper is to briefly discuss the overview and effectiveness of the treatment for various obstructive respiratory and lungs diseases through the drug composition known as Fluticasone propionate and a combination of Fluticasone and Salmeterol.

Significance of the Study

The results of this study will be significant for both, the doctors, as well as, the patients. This is essential due to the fact that it is impossible for the doctor to be able to continuously attend the patient suffering from obstructive lungs diseases, particularly asthma attacks. Therefore, in order to deal with breathing difficulties and/or asthma attack at any time, it is important for the patient to possess an effective medicine or a drug so as to counter the attack. This study aims to provide patients and doctors with an unbiased and impartial view of Fluticasone propionate and Fluticasone & Salmeterol. Moreover, the study also compares the drug in question with other drugs in terms of costs and therapeutic treatment (Boxtel and Sheffer 2000).

Discussion

Fluticasone and/or Salmeterol, is an anti-inflammatory molecular composition, belonging to a class of medications which is technically known as corticosteroids. It is administered by inhalation using a metered dose inhaler and a spacer. This provides a local effect on the bronchi and reduces systemic effects and inflammation .

The drug is administered to treat a wide variety of diseases, such as obstructive lungs diseases, including asthma and is also prescribed for treating seasonal allergic rhinitis, including hay fever and perennial rhinitis. It is also prescribed frequently for patients suffering from COPD, but only when combined with a bronchodilator long-term action. Fluticasone and/or Salmeterol can also be used to manage symptoms such as sinus pain and pressure associated with allergic rhinitis (McKeage & Keam 2009; Ratner et al. 2002).

Generic Name

This drug is generically known as Fluticasone and/or Salmeterol propionate.

List of the trade names

There are various trade names of the Fluticasone and/or Salmeterol propionate, such as Flixovate cream, Flixovate ointment, Flonase nasal sprays, Flovent aerosol, and Flovent Diskus dry powder for inhalation.

Actual manufacturer

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is the original manufacturer of fluticasone propionate, as well as a combination of fluticasone and salmeterol. GSK markets the chemical composition as Flonase and Flovent in US and Canada. The same medication in Europe, Brazil, Israel and South Africa is sold by the brand name of Flixonase or Flixotide. The chemical combination of fluticasone and salmeterol is sold by the brand name of Advair in the US and Canada.
