The article Fogged In, Published in The American Spectator, in the October 2011 issue, deals with the life and lifestyle prevailing in San Francisco. The writer, Gerald Nachman, claim that he belongs to a uncluttered area, where he spent the major part of his life and then moved to San Francisco, which is a totally different area altogether.
Purpose of Writing:
Nachman has adopted a sarcastic tone in order to convey the message, i.e. for presenting a comparison between the old and modern day san Francisco. He has described the different aspects of life, as they existed a few years back, to allow to current residents of the city to draw a comparison between the two eras.
The writer talks about San Francisco at the time when it was not the centre of politics, and was the center of attention even with the normal and everyday activities. The major audience of this article is the present day San Francisco citizens, who must be unaware of the past days and the way the city used to be. He states that San Francisco used to be full of life and vigor, with everyone indulged in something and no one used to interfere in other's matters. There was freedom, in the truest sense of the word, and all the different and outlandish things readily accepted without any objection (Bakalinsky, 2010, Pp: 162).
He is talking about the people of San Francisco who inhibited the city before it became the political hub, and who practiced all sorts of freedom and the major purpose behind presenting all the arguments is to draw a comparison between present day San Francisco and the way it used to be. He believes that the city was characterized by its uniqueness and tolerance, where there was tolerance for everything except for communication—people were never discussing one another. There were a few negative attributes as well, for instance the city dwellers placed themselves in very high esteem and used to think of themselves as being the best while others were considered to be unfortunate and less influential beings.
He achieves the purpose of writing by the number of facts and practical example provided by him, including the ones regarding facts and figures of sexual orientation of people and the way of dressing (or not dressing at all) practiced and accepted by people. These examples not only give a real and realistic touch to the article but also clarify the stance of the writer in a better and more understandable way. He states that religion was almost non existence, and the social issues rarely surfaced as peace prevailed in the area and people would not start protesting on every other occurring. Cultural and ethnicity also remained in the backdrop, as everyone was accepted as far as he is a citizen of San Francisco nothing else used to matter.

The writer had presented a clear picture of San Francisco, the accepting and tolerating city, before it became the centre of politics, and has ...
