Freedom of speech and freedom of the press are two important rights individuals have in the United States. This paper will throw light on the extent of freedom that the US press and media enjoys supported by the various news outlets highlighted on different mediums such as radio, television and the internet that are striving to gain our attention to the extent that some news media even acquire publicity by highlighting some very sensitive and contentious topics. Now, this freedom may be taken as harm to the society by a group while others might find no issues with this practice and find it quite suitable. In this paper, I will share my view point on the subject, giving definite illustrations to support my opinion.Introduction

Communication has always been a need of survival since ever. Various new means of communication have been discovered in every area from the ancient times when people used to mumble to convey to each other to the advanced dialogues in the numerous languages that have evolved to the vast, developing domain of the electronic media and the internet. One of the key needs of human nature is to communicate with others, express whatever they feel about everything around them without any fear or limitations; what would be called freedom of speech (Karen, 1999).

Also, it has lead people to share, understand and communicate more effectively with each other about things that are of common interest to them (Osegueda, 2006).

Freedom of speech does not merely mean one could say anything they wish to; in fact it one holds the responsibility to convey whatever the truth is and nothing which they are not sure about. This is because there is certain limitation in the Law that one has to keep in mind while being in US. Freedom of speech and expression has been declared as a common right by the UN in 1948 (Karen, 1999). One's opinion can match or mismatch with any other person's views and they are free to claim that but the limitation is on spreading false word about any other individual. Furthermore, any sort of statements catering issues like race, creed, color, religion, nationality or one's physical appearance do not lie under what we call freedom of speech.
