Function of Nature

Ishmael is a brilliant young man; he becomes the victim of distressing civil war in Sierra Leone. Like many other civilians, he is a victim of terror campaign on the part of both sides of the war. Ishmael is really lucky that he stay alive, because millions of people died during this civil war. Ishmael had a very bad experience, and he becomes boy soldier. Ishmael's family was murdered during the civil war just before he was going to reunite with them. He lost his friends who were killed brutally in front of his eyes, he saw millions of people dying here and there daily, and he constantly listened to screams of wounded people who were crying for their lives (Beah, 98). Ishmael lives in horrible conditions, and as time passes, he sees little hope that his existence will ever change. He lost all the hopes that he will see peace and live a sound and safe life again.

Ishmael was a 12 year boy who doesn't know that he is going to face the most disastrous and disturbing days of his life. He was living with his family, shows hip-hop skills to the people for amusing them. He is living a happy life with his friends. Ishmael was unaware of the dark life that is waiting for him. His childhood was destroyed by rebels and forced to travel for months into arid deserts and jungles of Africa. After a struggle of several months, he was recruited by the national army, and soon become child soldier. He is not able to differentiate between bad and good people. Ishmael is totally hopeless about his life. He did not know the motive of his life. Nature has given him such sorrows that he doesn't want to keep any hope.
