Introduction of San Quentin State Prison

San Quentin State Prison is one of the most famous and well known prisons of the world, which is in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation state prison for men. The prison is located in unincprporated San Quentin, Marim County of California, United States. The prison was opened in July of 1852 and is counted as one of the oldest prison of the state, thus holds special position in the landmarks and historical buildings and monuments of the state.

It is also eminent to mention here that that only death row present in California for male prisoners is present in the San Quentin State Prison, and the same is also the largest one in the United States. In addition, the prison has gas chamber, which is out of use since 1996, when the procedure of using lethal injections for executions was implemented and the same is under use to date. The prison spreads on an area of 432 acres and has the design capacity of 3, 082 prisoners. However, the same has the institution population of 5, 256 for the occupancy rate of 170.5 %. The prison also has Level 1 and Level 2 housing, along with the Reception Centre and the Condemned Unit. All the levels and the units are provided with various and different perimeters and dormitories, and it should also be noted that the prison is provided with a total staff of 1, 718 and the managing budget of the same is approximated at $210 million.

Correctional populations not only include the incarcerated persons, but it also extends to include all the individuals present in jails and prisons, along with those under supervision of the community, either in the form of parole or probation (Stinchcomb, 2011). It is eminent to mention here that researches and studies support the same idea and it has been proved that increasing the number of prisoners beyond the required number increases the chances of negative activities as well as the thetas of breaking rules and increasing the law and order issues within the prison.
