Genetically Modified Food

Introduction

With the aid of genetic engineering it is possible to alter the genetic information of a cell, for example genetic information can be added from a different cell. Genetic engineering makes it possible even to combine genes from different species.

Through genetic engineering it is possible to change specific genetic information. It is not liked to be used to rely on long-term hybrids or varieties, but some time by coincidence, the desired combination of genetic information arises.

Even before the development of the genetic engineering of crops intentionally the genes have been altered. Seeds were exposed to radioactive irradiation, for example, to induce mutations accumulated. These seeds were then sown and plants that have evolved coincidentally desired properties were bred (www.webmd.com).

Before that, it was necessary as long as a natural genetic mutation waited with desired properties. Only through targeted breeding and crossing could increase the likelihood of a positive mutation. For each mutation, whether to natural origin or artificially made by the people to develop both positive and negative characteristics.

Known Genetically Modified Organisms

Since the 90's reached a level of genetic engineering, which makes it possible to manipulate genes targeted. Since 1994, for example, can GM tomato in the U.S. and the UK were bought on the market.

Since then, the cultivation of GM crops has been clearly established. Genetically modified crops are currently mainly soybean, maize, cotton and canola. The share of other crops such as rice is still relatively low. But already about 60 percent of global soybean comes from genetically modified plants.

Genetically modified crops are used mainly in the U.S., Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China and India. In the EU, the proportion of genetically modified foods is very low. The issue regarding the genetically modified foods is a matter of controversy. This is because the subject has a genetic manipulation of the environment. This adds spice to the whole thing that the problem is related to GMO research and economic expansion of the number of companies operating in the agribusiness.

It appears that the initial genetic engineering activities pursued lofty goals (such as resolving the problem of global hunger, reducing pesticide use, lower food prices). However, it seems that the passwords are only part of the pro GMO propaganda, and the negative influence of distant GMOs are difficult to predict. Genetically modified organisms are living organisms that can mutate, reproduce, mate with other living organisms. Introduction of transgenic organisms into ...
