Genetically Modified Organisms

A genetically modified organism refers to an organism whose genetic material is altered by using different genetic engineering techniques. The organisms that are genetically modified often include micro-organisms i.e. yeast insects, bacteria and other mammals (Benbrook, 2004). The techniques of genetic engineering are used to isolate segments consist of DNA (genetic material) for introduction into the genome (hereditary material) of other, either by using as other living vector capable of inoculating DNA fragments (Agrobacterium tumefaciens, a bacterium ) either by bombarding the cells with DNA coated microparticles to these provisions, or other physical methods such as electric shock to allow DNA fragments penetrate into the interior of the core, through cell membranes.

What Practices are Detrimental to GMO

There seems to be a consensus among scientists that GM crops cause allergies. However, no standardized tests can be applied to check if the GM crop is safe. It is primarily because people do not realize that they are allergic to a certain food unless they have consumed it a number of times.

Economic Argument

The economic costs in the field of bioethics play a major role. Vital decisions need to be made on the regulations and compensations offered to farmers; if their crops are contaminated with GM materials. However, the authorities need to determine the degree to which organic farmers can reduce cross contamination. The implementation of decent insurance policies should also be looked at to improve the performance of farming sector.
