Introduction

A Group Home is a certified or approved home providing 24-hour care for children in a little group which usually has seven to twelve children at a time. In other words, Group Homes are those residential vicinities which provide a shelter in a friendly environment to the many problem facing individuals of the society. These homes are planned to serve the innocent children who suffer any sort of mental illness or disabilities and does not get adequate and required medical and emotional attention at homes (Encyclopedia of Mental Disorders. 2009).

These homes are facilitated by well trained care providers who work round the clock. When a person aims to start a business to establish a mental health centre, he needs to identify the need of such centre in a particular neighborhood or locality (Encyclopedia of Mental Disorders. 2009).

This paper aims to develop a guideline for starting a business addressing the need of group home for children who are mentally ill. Discussing the important steps to be essential for a new business, we will highlight some of the core components such as the history of group homes and their requirement in present society. Generally the group homes are regular, bought by the group home managers and tailored to meet up with the requirements of the residents. Apart from any adaptive features like wheelchair access ramps, these group homes are nearly identical from other homes in the neighborhood.

An Overview

The concept of group homes dates back to the nineteen sixties when the psychiatric sanatoriums were closed, and the sick individuals who were still undergoing ailments but were forcefully discharged from the hospices needed places to recover properly. These Group Homes intended to grant care, helping the disabled persons especially to integrate with the other community members. These care providers help the in reducing the stigma in society subjected to these persons and also help in improving their life quality. The basic purpose of these Group homes was to provide them a complete home like atmosphere where they could live in a family environment.

In 1963, a 'Community Mental Health Centers Act', was passed which provided the rights to a group home to be eligible for the national and state funds in order to support their practices. Some Group Homes operate on grants and donations taken from different social activists, philanthropists and religious entities (Encyclopedia of Mental Disorders. 2009).

Some of these Group homes are also owned by individuals, but many are run in support of the Government organizations. Those businesses which are run on an individual basis can be for profit or a nonprofit business both. From a commercial aspect, these group homes are usually considered money-making (Encyclopedia of Mental Disorders. 2009).

Children who live in these group homes are taught the living skills by the staff members.
