For over forty years that Frank Gehry uses all his insight and his capacity for invention methods and materials used to close the space. By creating powerful forms that characterize his work, he has thus succeeded in changing the perception of architecture. Born in the Canadian city of Toronto, he moved with his family to Los Angeles in 1947 at the age of 17(Ashworth 1990 16). There he opened his first studio in 1962 and modest and from the outset, the visual character of the city has profoundly influenced his work. Many things we see out there-stucco bungalows, fencing wire mesh houses, colorful Spanish-inspired tiles, palm trees swaying in the wind, the movement and the vastness of the Pacific are from long key elements of its architecture. This is his skill that when adopting the personality of the place where he works is still strong and is reflected in the various projects which the charge in the world. His work in Europe and the Middle East, Prague, Berlin and Jerusalem soon reflect a thorough knowledge of these historical cities and, while fully distinguishing architectural forms that surround old, opted to maintain a dialogue with them intense and rich.
BILBAO
Bilbao is an built-up district of roughly 41-square-kilometers established on the Atlantic seaboard area of Northern Spain. Gehry has matured professionally in Los Angeles in conjunction with a group of artists with whom he shared many ideas, as Chuck Arnoldi, Larry Bell, Billy Al Bengston, Ron Davis, Robert Irwin, Ed Moses, Ken Price and Ed Ruscha. While his early mentors in architecture were Rudolph M. Schindler and Frank Lloyd Wright, molded plywood chairs by Charles and Ray Eames led him to practice his first experiments in the world of furniture design. Although in its first period as an architect, he has designed a number of notable works, it was not until 1977-78 that he attracts the attention of specialists with the renovation of his own home in Santa Monica, a wooden painted pink dating back 20 (Beke 1995 285). The originality of his idea to open the kitchen and living area on the sky using windows cube and build a new house near the old screens with wire mesh, plywood and corrugated , won him to occupy a unique and privileged position among his colleagues. One of his first clients was the Loyola Marymount University for which he undertook in 1978 a project still under development. It is building a campus for the Faculty of Law University, located in a zona industrial near downtown Los Angeles. The client has expressed his desire to see it include references to the classical tradition, then offers a set Gehry buildings like an acropolis instead of a single large structure. Despite the skepticism with which the first Faculty welcomed the project, the campus has experienced significant success and has often been compared to what it deemed the campus of Thomas Jefferson University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
