Guided Critical Review of a Journal Article

Context of the paper

What were the aims of the study?

The aim of this study was to understand the experiences of the clinical neonatal nurses in taking part in the nurse led clinical research. The study facilitates the understanding of the extent to which the nurses participate in the clinical research.

Research Design

What was the design of the study?

The study employed the qualitative research design in the form of the semi structures, face to face interviews. Phenomenology was used to explore the nurse perception.

Identify and clearly describe the three key features of the research design

Phenomenology is a reflective method that can be applied to various fields of study and is often defined loosely as an investigation of how objects appear to consciousness (Bogossian, 2008, 13-18). Nurse perception was explained and analyzed the current were recorded, sub-themes were the role, availability, time, training, and commitment. Qualitative study used interviews, according to the examination of attitudes and barriers to research participants working in the Neonatal units in hospitals.

Why is the research design appropriate for the study?

The qualitative research was appropriate due to the descriptive nature of the study. Moreover, qualitative research allows for multiple interpretations of reality and alternative interpretations of the data over time. Qualitative research is an approach particularly valuable because it analyses the ways in which individuals and groups constitute and interpret organizations and societies. In this case such interpretation is in the form of nurse perception of their participation in the clinical research.

However, the collection of primary data is not an easy task to perform but the situation needs that. One cannot take such big decisions without full research and without knowing the ideas of those who have already taken those decisions and knows the practicality of the work. The questions which are in the mind of the researcher would be asked in primary data collection (Levy, 2003, 9-11). If performed well, primary data collection method can be the best source of information needed. Qualitative research also facilitates the learning of cultures and organizational structures because it provides the researcher ways to examine the knowledge, behaviour and artefacts that participants share and use to interpret their experiences.

Sampling

Who were the study participants?

The study participants were employees as well as neonatal nurse named newborn nurseries are located in the metropolitan area and regional centers in south-east Queensland, Australia.Viiden nurses involved in this study were all women, four of whom are committed to nursing education through the hospital system in Australia. The fifth was a British nurse office who initiated the formation of pre-registration UK hospital system. All participants were involved in the role of the clinical trial data collection or initiation of research projects.

How was the sample selected?

The participation in the nurse led research was the criteria in sample selection because the study aim was to describe the clinical nurse experience. The researchers collected the sample by visiting the hospital and were granted the approval to place and advertisement for the participants.
