Impact Of Environment And Identity On Quality Of Life Among Older Adults

Introduction

Aging is a progressive growth of changes that occurs in an individual life with time. It increases the susceptibility of a person towards diseases and with the advancing age death can occur. The time related changes that occur with time is due to the aging process. Aging has a huge impact on the health and wellbeing of a patient. This is due to the exposure of environmental vulnerabilities, gender and identity that plays an important role by influencing the quality of life of ageing adults. Using the context of ageing and its process, the impact of environment and identity would be observed and identified on the health and wellbeing of ageing adults.

Discussion

Aging is a gradual process but it does occur on a continuous note. Different authors and scientific research have defined aging in different manners. It can define as a distinct and progressive decline in the normal body functions of a human being and they become more prone to develop chronic and acute disease. It is the loss of normal body physiology, failure to adapt to the environmental changes and failure to maintain the homeostasis. The body lost its capability to maintain the metabolic equilibrium. The tissues and organs of the body show a decline in functions and lead towards impaired functioning. There are cascade of events which take place within the body, cause wear and tear as a result of which there is loss of function and eventual over a period of time it causes death.

In aging process all these changes occur with time and a person travels through different transition of health states. All these changes make the physical appearance of the person different from what they use to be when young. The obvious visible signs of aging process are greying of hair, wrinkles, deterioration of the body systems like low cardiac output, muscle loss, stiffening of the arteries, and ultimately all these changes lead to death or disability.

Gender and Aging Process

Aging is a continual adaption that takes place during the life cycle. It is a process that as its impact on the external environment and on the changes in the internal functioning and capabilities of an individual undergoing the process. Aging has a strong impact on the health and wellbeing of a person and influences the life expectancy of a person according to one's susceptibility towards diseases and illness. Aging process increases dependency of a person on caregivers to perform tasks and activities as with time the older age group faces difficulty in performing many of the daily activities alone and manage their health independently (Tossato, et.al. 2007, pp. 402).

Gender is an imperative aspect that contours up the experiences of aging in people. There have been many differences of aging that has been stressed upon when comprehending the process of aging in people. The differences are related to ...
