Violence has always been a part of sports entertainment. Rules that ensure athletes do not perform in an excessively violent manner and those that ensure the safety of athletes and spectator are, historically speaking, a modern introduction. Ancient violent sports generally carried the risk of death by the time the activity was completed.

History of Violence in Sports
Introduction
An element of danger has always been a part of sports. It gets the athletes going and keeps the spectators on the edge of their seats. This can be traced back centuries to the times of Romans, and even further to lesser civilized societies. Scientists, scholars and psychologists alike have long pondered the human fascination with violent sports. Many believe it is the perfect way to release one's pent up emotions. Some civilizations found violent sports as a mechanism to differentiate between the strong and the weak, as a mechanism of providing justice and as a means to ensuring the survivability of their race.
Today, violent sports include American Football, Ice Hockey, Ruby, Lacrosse, Boxing, Mixed Martial Arts, Soccer, Wrestling and Water Polo to name a few. These are sports that have gathered massive fan following and thus become the prime targets for activists who work hard to limit the amount of violence allowed in such sports. The specific terminology “violent sport” does not necessarily mean that the individual most certainly die by the time the final whistle is blown. The standards are slightly lower. The concept of violence can also revolve around certain forms of intimidation (Delaney, 2009, pp. 157) Acts of violence include the intentional attempt to injure a fellow player or coach and also include threats or actual physical harm to those engaged in the sport or merely spectating the event (news.discovery.com).
