HIV/AIDS in South Africa

Abstract

Purpose of the study

This research paper has further explored the knowledge, practices, attitudes, and perceptions of nurses regarding HIV/AIDS in the rural Limpopo, and largely black provinces of the state of South Africa.

Methodology

This research was a cross sectional study in which a random sample was taken from a primary health care center of South Africa in which the sample size of the health care centers were 41 and the sample size of the nurses in hospital was 69, the research was carried out in the year 2005.

Results

This research has identified that the nurses working inside hospitals of rural areas reported a privileged frequency regarding the care for the patients that are suffering from the epidemic of HIV/AIDS, the probability was (P < 0Æ05), but the results are compared with the nurses training inside hospitals located in the rural areas the ration was much less as compared to the one's working in hospitals located in urban areas, the probability was (P < 0Æ001).

Implications

This research helped in the identification of the fact that there is an essential need for accelerating the procedure of training of nurses working inside the public health care centers located in the rural parts of South Africa, due to the increasing number of patients that requires care, along with that there is also an essential factor for training nurses regarding certain precautionary techniques, so that injuries such as needle stick could be prevented.

Conclusion

This research has concluded that there is an essential need for accelerating the training process for training the nurses in rural areas, along with that it was also identified that there is a need for a wider implementation of post exposure prophylaxis and methods of universal precautions in the public health facilities to the hospitals located in the rural areas of South Africa.

Introduction

This study has helped in identification, analysis and further investigation of the set of practices, acquaintance, manners, and perceptions of the training and experience of nurses regarding HIV/AIDS in the rural area of Limpopo, and the largely black provinces of the state of South Africa, because the epidemic HIV/AIDS in South Africa is becoming an alarming health issue. Every year more thee over 5.7 million South Africans get AFFECTED BY aids, South Africa is ranked number one among the countries with the most number of infected people from HIV/AIDS. The 2007 UNAIDS report estimated that 5.7 million South Africans with HIV/AIDS infected, at least just under twelve percent of a population of forty eight million people. Due to this fact it has become immensely important to train the nurses specially those that are located in the rural areas of South Africa, so that they can effectively treat the patients suffering from this epidemic.
