HMV in Administration - Strategic Analysis

HMV in Administration - Strategic Analysis

Introduction

This report is an individual discussion on the team project that, the rest of the group members and I made. Our project was concerned with the identification of the firm that was undergoing some kind of issue. After research and analysis, we were able to settle on the organization, HMV in Administration. There were other companies too that were discussed and considered to be pursued for this project. These companies included Apple, Blackberry manufacturers Research in Motion, Waterstones and Nokia. Apple, Nokia and RIM are renowned competitors in the technology industry. Apple is diverse and own iTunes, an online music store. Profitability of apple is through the roof where as Nokia and RIM are also strong contenders in the industry. Both these competitors have renewed themselves in mobile markets through successful launch of its newly designed smart phone models of Nokia Lumina and Blackberry 10, respectively. Likewise, Nokia has taken initiative and join forces with Windows, which is a very reputable and sustainable company, and as a result have boosted Nokia to a much more desirable position. For this reason, it was decided to select a company in a much more detrimental position. Finally, Waterstones is an online bookshop that offers plethora of titles through its flagship website's ecommerce tools. Waterstones has exhausted many of its options by collaborating with Amazon and therefore choosing this company to focus on will limit the potential options that can be raised.

However, we chose HMV because as a group we felt the organization is in the middle of some critical strategic issues. As such, it is potentially at a risk of failing. These were facts that we were not aware of, but they were observed as we continued with our research that involved meeting with the organizational administrators. Given the scenario, which HMV found it in, we as a team devised certain strategic options that the management at HMV can pursue to alleviate some of the critical issues surrounding the firm?
