Holocaust and Literature

Introduction

There have been a countless number of events in the history whose intensity could still shake the hearts of many. One of these events is the Holocaust. Commonly known as the “Massacre of Jews”, the events however took away many other lives and still continues to haunt many if remembered. For decades, time after time, there were several biographies made, articles written and films produced. However, the event and its intensity ahs also forced many of the writers to introduce the topic in various literary aspects. Hence, even there a number of authors used their pen and their writings to express their feelings regarding various aspects of Holocaust. One of such authors is Elie Wiesel, who is a firm believer of associating Holocaust or the related events with Literature.

Discussion

It is a common tradition followed globally to preserve the ruins and discuss in literature events as Bizarre as Holocaust. However, one of the chief reason why Holocaust still remains the most discussed and mourned event from history is the brutality beyond imagination that was shown in that era. The ethnic genocide of Jews and number of unbelievably torturous ways and means adapted to kill them certainly makes the event worth discussion. Moreover, many individuals might also feel that erasing the event from our memories also means ignoring and erasing the pain of millions of individuals who were killed or burnt alive in that era.

However, this is the very reason Elie believes that the traces of events of Holocaust should completely scratched away. Elie believes that practice adapted by the Auschwitz Concentration and Extermination negates and violate the very basis of humanity and its principles. Therefore, Elie believes that inclusion of such an incident in literature that has nothing to offer to its readers but sadness should not be discussed at all (Wiesel,1997)

Literature and Poetry on Holocaust and Auschwitz

As an individual with interest in the areas and fields of both History and Literature, I will have to say that I agree with Elie in a lot of ways.

Although I agree with the fact that literature itself a field does not cater any one particular genre. Any form of writing, essays, stories or poems on various natures of topics, wars, weddings, events and highlighting any emotion, love, hatred or revenge are included in literature. Therefore, poems and texts on Holocaust are justified form this criteria. However, I also believe that literature is also meant to serve some purpose. The words of a story or the lines or phrases in a poem must have something to offer to its reader to admire, learn, feel and most importantly to appreciate. With a poem or story written on Holocaust that would describe the tragic events in a series, mourn the death of many innocent lives and criticize the injustice of the oppressor cannot possibly offer a lot to the readers.
