Structure of the Hospitality Industry

In UK, the hospitality industry can be defined as a broad and varied industry. This industry ranges from a single person organisation to the worldwide corporations. In this industry, a total of 80 different jobs are done by people (John, 2012, 2).

The hospitality industry does only comprise of hotels and restaurants rather there are 12 different sectors in this industry. The following chart describes these twelve different industries (John, 2012, 2):

Different Sized Operations in the Industry

According to the research, it is estimated that in UK, around 80 percent of the operations in hospitality employ few than five people. This entails that hospitality industry is a great industry for all those people who want start their own business. This business can be anything and may range from a small restaurant to big five start hotel (John, 2012, 2).

Different Customers

In this industry, different customers have different demands and needs. Same type of services and food is not demanded by every customer. Industry conducts the analysis to know different needs of different people to design products and services to meet the diverse needs of diverse range of customers. Some of the customers require just a small room where they can just put their heads down, for such customers a hostel or small guest house are appropriate. On the other hand, there are some customers who want more than what they have in their homes, for such customers five start and luxurious hotels are there (John, 2012, 3).

Commercial or Service Sector

If the hospitality is the main purpose of the industry and it is the only purpose because of which the industry is there then this can be regarded as the commercial operation. On the other hand, if this industry is there just because many people stay, study or work there then, it can be regarded as the service operation (John, 2012, 4).

Profit Making or Working in a Budget

Most of the businesses that conduct its operation in the hospitality industry conduct its operations to make profit, but there are some businesses that do not want to make profit rather such business only make attempts to keep to a particular budget. For instance, there are a lot of schools canteens that have a budget of 75p food cost per meal per day. There are some workplaces, where the canteens work in accordance of a budget but the prices are then reduced. A cheap lunch is an incentive to work there - a benefit of the job (John, 2012, 4).

Restricted Customers or Open to the General Public

Most of the businesses that conducts its operation in the hospitality industry can sell its products and services to anyone. But, there are some businesses in which the range of customers is limited and they can only sell to small portion of the public.
