CHAPTER 01: INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Crime and criminal behaviours have been an important, yet a disturbing constituent that society, countries and entire blocs are facing at large across the globe. Like lot of social behaviors, crime is wide-ranging and it is potentially formed by a variety of factors that operate within and outside the individuals, which exist on the macro level and even on the micro level, and that have effects across various points in the life cycle of any person.

Revealing that what exactly causes crime is thus an overwhelming task that benefits from various efforts to view the origins from many angles. The reason of this degree is to confine the range of thoughts on crime factor and that now lies within criminology. However, keeping all things constant a major role is being played by media, which holds enough capacity to influence, mold or even entirely change the perception and opinions that viewers and audience tend to hold towards a certain person, event or current trends prevalent in the society.

Problem Statement

The problem statement, undertaking for this paper, implies 'identifying how are youth crimes being portrayed and brought forth through different form and modes of media to the notice of the general public'.

Research Aim

The aim of this research is to examine and understand the current literature on the potential causes of crime amongst minority youths in the United Kingdom and media [MP1] representations of minorities and crime and whether this leads to a fear of crime of young people in society.

Research Objectives

The main research questions for this research are as follows:

What are some key sociological factors of why young people engage in crime?

How youth crime is portrayed in the media and does this lead to a fear of crime in society?

Significance of the Study

With reference to the research study undertaken, the researchers shall be able to identify and highlight the core factors and reasons, which lead to youth crime. In addition to this, it would also aid in understanding the role media and communications play in establishing the opinions and perceptions of the general public regarding youth crime, occurring and prevalent in the society.

Limitations of the Research

For the purpose of maintaining a stronger focus and in order to maintain effective compliance with the research undertaken, it would be better to create and maintains and limitations and restraints, which would help us understand 'youth crime' and the trends prevalent in the area of media representation and the kind of issues existing related to sociological changes occurring today.
