How is ICT improving learner experience in Schools?

Introduction

When people speak of Information and communications technology in schools, the term is now associated with the use of computers and modern innovations. IT is a euphemism for internet and computers. On the other hand, technology broadly considered refers to the many technologies used in the classroom such as television, VCRs, overhead projectors, and audio tape players, all of which should be used as creativity as possible. ICT can be assessed with rubrics similar to those developed for writing. Assessment should be aligned with content standards for teaching with ICT. Teachers should be mindful of certain caveats regarding ICT in the classroom, such as allowing it to become an end in itself, and they should take steps to protect children from the potential dangers of using the Internet. ICT and instructional psychology have been the main sources of one kind of learning activity. Specific programming of computer-based lessons characterizes this first approach to computer use.

Literature Review

A review of literature related to the use of ICT in improving learner experience in Schools shows that Students in today's classrooms must learn to use ICT to be prepared for the world of tomorrow. ICT is engaging and motivating and encourages students to use higher levels of thinking. Moreover, students benefit from participating in the social, collaborative, and cooperative environment that typically characterizes groups working at computers. (Tom 2011, 45)

ICT can be applied across the curriculum, integrating word processing and writing with content areas such as Excel, word, PowerPoint, art, science, math, and social studies. ICT should never be presented as merely a tool or as a separate activity conducted in a computer lab. Nor is it sufficient simply to allow students to play games on the computer or to surf the net. Rather, ICT should be presented through classroom activities that are student centered and that are contextualized through social interaction in a purposeful, meaning-centered process. In the best sense, ICT is another means with which teachers can help children learn—to find answers to questions, to solve problems, and to expand their understandings of topics. (Connell 2013, 12-15)

Problems faced by the ICT approach to computer use result from the cost of the computer as a primary medium for exposition of learning materials, the difficulties of accurately identifying unconstrained input (text, algebraic expressions, drawings, spoken expression, etc.), and the lack of a well-developed theory of instruction. (Connell 2013, 12-15)

Some researchers suggest that major advances in instructional use of ICT will occur through significant developments in artificial intelligence, natural language processing, speech recognition, and virtual reality. Although information scientists are typically more interested in their own disciplines and related research topics than in educational techniques and practice, the tools developed may be useful to others. The results of ICT research may be an important source of suitable models for instruction strategies, information structures, and representations of knowledge.
