Introduction

The Chicano movement started during the era of Civil rights with three objectives. The first objective was the restoration of land, second was the rights for the farm workers and the third objective was the education reforms. Before the 1960s, the Latinos did not really have much influence in the national political arena. But all of that changed when the Mexican American Political Association took steps to elect John F. Kennedy for the president in the year 1960, distinguishing the Latinos as a significant voting bloc.

When Kennedy was finally sworn in into the office, he thanked the Latino community by not only giving some of the posts in his administration to the Hispanics, but also making efforts to resolve the concerns and issues of the Hispanic community. So then, the Latinos, Mexican Americans in particular started to demand that the changes should be brought in the areas of labour, education and all other sector so that their needs could also be met.
