Introduction

Illiteracy is a chronic crisis of huge proportions all around the world, especially inside the state of America. Illiteracy is an issue which keeps millions of Americas living under the shadows of disparity. The problem of illiteracy is causing some huge and irreparable damages to the American society. Illiteracy is not just the inability to read, illiteracy prevent a human being from living a normal life. Approximately more than twenty four million Americans today suffer from this problem of illiteracy. Illiteracy is not always the lack of formal education, but instead under some circumstances it could also be defined as a learning disability or a form of medical disorder (ILLITERACY IN AMERICA, pp.55-67).

Transition statement

In this paper we are going to suggest techniques for overcoming the issue of illiteracy inside the state of America. However, it is a problem which is not easy to resolve, moreover the number of illiterate people in America is increasing rapidly every year. Although, if this problem of illiteracy is not resolved soon enough then there are huge chances that the economic growth of America would derail, and America might also face some huge consequences due to this chronic crisis.

Discussion

Millions of Americans every year go through the life of illiteracy, which is a shameful secret for them one that they cannot even share with their family members and close friends. As a consequence these illiterate Americans get deprived of the right to read, drive, and even get a good job for themselves. The government of United States is not taking enough measures to overcome the issue of illiteracy. This problem of illiteracy results in unemployment and sometimes even in homelessness. There are two types of illiteracy;

Functional illiteracy

A person who is functionally illiterate is one who cannot read at the grade level between grade four to grade eight, a functionally illiterate person is able to perform some uncomplicated and routine tasks, but he lacks some of the most basic skills essential to cope up well with the ever changing society, which means that a functionally illiterate individual is one who is unable to read a book or newspaper with much comprehension.

Marginal illiteracy
