Romans and Greek Art

The Romans adopted the external language of 'Greek architecture, adapting it to their own purposes. Their vision of space, however, was radically different from that of their Greek and architectural forms fully reflect these differences. The main difference is a political-social: the Greek structure was formed by a multitude of city-states, often in conflict with each other, the Romans, however, conquered territories and subjugated them with their power, this required a series of public facilities and control (such as the extremely efficient Roman roads or aqueducts).

Originality in Roman art developed quite late: for the entire republican period architectural forms in use depend heavily on earlier traditions Italic , in turn heavily influenced by Greek art, but already bearers of important innovations (e.g. the use of ' arc ). In the second century BC, the development of construction techniques as the cement is readily exploited by the forms of the interior space of buildings, which the Romans are most affected and for practical reasons, both from the artistic point of view. A feature of Roman expansion is the intense work of urbanization of the territory, which will lead to the founding of many towns, as well as the magnification of existing ones (Frampton, 1992).

Middle Ages

In the architecture of the Middle Ages are mainly three styles: Byzantine, it influences throughout the period, the Romanesque between the eleventh and twelfth centuries, and the Gothic style between the twelfth century to Byzantine century XV.

Byzantine architecture is the first important style in the Middle Ages, known for its structural integrity, using splendid mosaics interiors. Byzantine art is one of the greatest episodes of universal art. It is based on Greek and early Christian art, with large oriental influences (Persian and Muslim).

For the temples, is used in preference centralized plant or a Greek cross with large domes on pendentives. Although the construction materials are not particularly rich, yes it is their decoration with mosaics and wall paintings, where the representation of the human figure, solemn, hieratic, generates a sense of spirituality that will inherit later Romanesque art. A good example of this type of building is the Byzantine church of San Vitale. Romanesque art developed in Europe during the Middle Ages, eleventh and twelfth centuries, is developed by architects, painters and sculptors (Jencks, 1993).

The Romanesque architecture was born in France and is developed mainly in Italy, Germany and Spain. Their characteristics are derived from a combination of building elements of the Arab World and the West. Simple geometric elements prevail of each culture. Cubes, prisms, pyramids and cylinders are used to shape the buildings; the result is simple and robust appearance.

The use of the medieval type buildings completed with the development of the Gothic style which is of Germanic origin. It is characterized by long lines with arches and ornamentation innovative look recharged (Nuttgens, 2003).
