Racism is something which does not define any boundaries; it exists in every part of the world on the basis of social, cultural, religious, color and academic grounds. Unfortunately, super powers like United States of America, which is a multicultural and multiracist country is also facing the issues of racism and problems originating from it. When going down in the history of USA, we can find the roots of Racism from its evolution as a country.
America comprises of multiple races, which are of white Americans with European ancestral background their fore fathers were mainly emigrants of Spain, England, France, Poland and other European countries. They were the slave owners who brought in African slaves in the early seventeenth century for labor and punishment reasons. Black Americans with background mainly of captivated Africans brought in as slaves for low wages and other emigrants from the rest of the world (Fredrickson 2011).
When we further classify the American races they include Native Americans, Latin Americans, African Americans, Indian Americans and Asian Americans. Native Americans are mostly people in the northern geographical location of America which comprises of the states of Hawaii and Alaska. Latin Americans are those who have a cultural background of Spain, Portuguese and French. Asian Americans have their ancestral history from the continent of Asia mainly the countries of Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and other neighboring countries; they were the people who migrated in search of jobs and better opportunities. Indian Americans are the people belonging to the countries of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Majority of them came with the sole motive of employment at higher wages, and some young Indians migrated for the purpose of education. Black Americans were mainly African emigrants. European colonists brought them to America (US Census Bureau, 2011).
White Americans as per their socioeconomic strength and ancestral backgrounds were considered the superior caste, as they are the majority stake holders in the economy of USA. The Black Americans are considered the lowest caste as they were mostly employed in Labor Tasks, low status jobs of cleaning, security and other professions, while the emigrants from South East Asia and India are the emigrant class who migrate for the sake of jobs and employment.
Why Interracial Marriages were not accepted?
From the early days, white and Black Americans had a prominent status difference on the basis of slavery, stakes, wealth, ownership and education. White Americans were those who were better educated, business owners, rich in wealth and controlled all social norms. The black Americans were not considered humans as well they were a part of a society which had been slaves for 200 years and discriminated legally for 100 years, they were catered in the lowest economic tier and social injustice to them was not considered a crime. This attitude of whites brought a significant class difference it reflected in their marriages.
