First Language Acquisition

Introduction

Language acquisition is one of the most significant topics in cognitive sciences. Almost all the theories of cognition have tried to explain the topic of language acquisition. No other topic has gained much debate as this topic. The possession of language is a trait of humans as all the normal human beings speak; however no other animal has this attribute.

The main characteristic of the human beings is language as by which they become familiar about each other's thoughts and views. Human beings and language are intimately interlinked to each other which make their bonding very strong. Every time a child or a person speaks, he is edifying something about the language.

However, the learning of the first language is something that every child does fruitfully in a span of few years and without the requirement of formal and proper lessens. As language is so close to the heart and soul of the human beings, it is not astonishing that the acquisition of language of the children has obtained a lot of consideration.

There is no set age for language acquisition. Every child has a different capacity to learn and understand things; therefore, his learning capacity is different from every other child. This is the reason some children begin to communicate at early ages while some take a longer time.

People with bold ideas about the mind of the human will show that the initial steps of the children are the steps which are in the correct path. The acquisition of the language is not only intrinsically appealing but its study is a way to view for tangible answers to queries that pervade the cognitive science.

However, there are many diversifications in the interaction of the patterns of the parents and child around the world. All the normally growing children become the users of language at a similar and same rate. The way of learning the language of the children follows a certain path and is intrinsically organized in nature.

It is obvious that the children must be open to the elements of the language and should be able to interrelate with others, but their interaction and exposure occurs extremely changeable. It is been observed and proved that if the children are not exposed to the language before the age of 6 or 7 then they never acquire a language (Grimshaw, et al. 1998).

The young children are not taught the language formally however language acquisition is a fundamental part of the complete development and overall growth of the children i.e. socially, physically and cognitively.
