Introduction

This paper intends to provide literature review of language disorders in general. Language disorders are one of the most disturbing and throbbing disorders which impacts the life of people significantly. Language disorders are also known as speech disorders. Such disorders relate to the linguistics information and its underlying processing. Language disorders usually involve the grammar, semantics and various other aspects of language. The language disorders are usually diagnosed in early ages making it easier for the care givers to take corrective measures. The language or speech disorders are witnessed in both children and adults. There are various reasons that underline the prevalence of speech disorders. The purpose of this paper is to make the readers aware about the language disorders and the various important related aspects.

Literature Review

Literature reviews are always important to provide significant information about any topic. Language disorders are essentially related to the ability to speak, understand, comprehend or even write properly (Kohnert, 2010). The language of speech impairments follow the relevant disorders which are related to the processing of linguistic information. The most common problems that are witnessed in association with the language disorders involve the problems to comprehend grammar, meaning, or even syntax of the words spoken. Further, the speech problems are associated with either receiving or expressing language.

In accordance with the views of Kohnert in 2010; the receptive disorders are usually related to the involvement of impaired language comprehension. Such disorders basically relates to the problems which people face in comprehending or understanding the meaning of what others are trying to say. On the other hand, some people have language disorders which are associated with their own speaking abilities (Brunner & Seung, 2009). The expressive language disorders involve the production of language improperly. The people who have problems in speaking and writing are assume to have expressive language problems. On the rare side of language disorders, people tend to have a combination of both; expressive and receptive form of language disorders (Kohnert, 2010).

Many parents had a sincere conviction about their children's ability to learn. Their children's failure to learn, however, became a challenge and a struggle to convince others that the condition was not simply intellectual disability. The struggle to define LD persists even today. Educators do not agree on what a learning disability is. Definitions may include its cause, its impact on learning, or what it is not. The IDEA 2004 addresses what a learning disability is and is not. Kohnert in 2010 suggested that according to IDEA, a learning disability is "a disorder of basic psychological processes." Communication is the principal area impacted by a learning disorder wherein specific skills are affected.

Communication problems are an "imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or do mathematical calculations." Of particular importance in the definition of LD, especially for eligibility, is the discrepancy between intelligence and achievement, a common practice among most states.
