CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Background

This study was an examination of the factors that are possibly related to organizational innovation capability. Innovation has become widely recognized as a key to competitive success. Leaders of businesses of all sizes and from all industries make innovation among their top priorities and concerns. An issue is that, for many, innovation seems “mysterious, unpredictable, and apparently unmanageable”. The aim of this study was to help organizations release their innovation potential by examining the possible correlations between organizational innovation capability and two factors: innovation drivers and organizational culture. The background, the problem and purpose statements, as well as the significance of the study to organizational innovation management and leadership, are described in this chapter. The research questions, and the research method and design, are introduced subsequently. The chapter is concluded with a discussion of the significance, the nature, and the conceptual framework of the study.

Leadership is a complex and multidimensional concept. Leadership is an interactive process in which a leader influences a group. The nature of the leadership influencing process remains an ambiguous issue among leadership scholars. Little agreement exists among scholars on how to define leadership. Burns (1978) defined leadership as “ the reciprocal process of mobilizing, by persons with certain motives and values, various economic, political and other resources, in a context of competition and conflict, in order to realize goals independently or mutually held by both leaders and followers” (p. 425). Kouzes and Posner (1993) noted, “Leadership is a reciprocal relationship between those who choose to lead and those who decide to follow”. Drucker (1955) called leadership “the lifting of man's vision to higher sights, the raising of man's performance to a higher standard, the building of man's personality beyond its normal limitations” (p. 195). Northouse (2004) suggested that leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group to achieve a common goal (Alexiev 2010 1343).

Problem statement

Leadership thought is both a process and a product of its cultural environment and must be examined within this framework. Each theory reflects the historical circumstances within which it evolved. These forces served to shape existing thoughts, which galvanize action and set the stage for future development and achievement. Leaders have vision and the ability to communicate this to others. The actions of leaders also show that the quality of leadership is critical for the success and survival of groups and organizations.
