Elvis Aron Presley, the most popular American singer of the 20th Century, was born on 8th January, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, United States of America. He grew up in a family surrounded by grandparents, cousins, uncles and aunties who were closely knit together. He was born a twin, but, unfortunately his brother was stillborn.
Presley was an actor as well as a singer who successfully proved his talent in the field of entertainment. He left music for the sake of joining the military. Elvis served in Germany just like any other soldier and later in Texas, after the death of his mother, he decided to live off base with his father and grandmother. Return from the military turned out to be the revolutionary point, both, for Elvis and the music and culture of America.
Early Years
Presley, as being the only child, was close to both of his parents. He had a special bond with his mother, and he maintained that emotional bond with her till the day she died. He belonged to a Christian family who attended the church of Assembly of God and Presley's musical inspirations began from there.
He was an average student, but his teachers were impressed by his talent of singing and encouraged him to enter singing contest at a fair of Mississippi-Alabama and Dairy Show. Two of his uncles, who were the pastors at the church, gave him his initial lessons for playing guitar. Presley recalled his early years of playing music, 'I took the guitar, and I watched people, and I learned to play a little bit. But I would never sing in public. I was very shy about it', (Guralnick, 1994, p.23).
