Introduction

Knowledge and intelligence have always been important for human prosperity. In the modern era of globalization, literacy has proved be a great source for development, in this sense literacy is directly proportional to the economic growth any nation. In this essay, I shall look deeper into concepts of literacy and poverty, while proving literacy as a modern force for development.

Discussion

When I think about word literacy, I think the ability to read and write in a way that allows a person to act as a contributing member of society. A couple of weeks ago I considered myself very literate person. However, after reading the texts for this class, this view has changed. I realize that there are many types of literacy in today's world. These include text written literacy skills, literacy, verbal, visual literacy and technological literacy. These five examples support the idea that the definition of the word literacy is very vague.

The poverty can be defined as the condition of insufficient resources or income. In its most extreme form, poverty is a lack of basic human needs (nutritious food, clothing, housing, clean water and medical care) (Huston, 25). Poverty can cause terrible suffering and perhaps even death. Depending on the number of where you live, depending upon how severe is poverty facing you. In many developing regions such as Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe they suffer from acute malnutrition, outbreaks of disease, famine and war (Mabel, 30). Poverty in these areas is very different from poverty in some rich countries like the United Kingdom and Japan, where the effects of poverty are poor nutrition, mental illness, drug addiction, crime and high rates of disease.
