Compare and Contrast the Welcome Table and What It's Like To Be a Black Girl

Introduction

What it's like to be a black girl is a fascinating poem that states the story of a black girl experiencing and exploring what is to become a black women in a changing social circle. This poem is tumbling different colors in the eyes of the reader to make them suffering and blue in the silence. Whereas if, we talk about the story Welcome table is a story of an old and almost blind women who strives and struggle to cover the necessary distance to the white church, when the white people see her on the entrance of the church they get shocked and go lost and could not decide what to do (Singer, 2008, 15). Her appearance was such that. white people assumed she was a black maid, cook, or black mistress.

Both of these poems allow us to see the difference people have created between ethnicity and race. It also enables us to see what can happen when ethnicity and race is over exaggerated or discussed in the community. While comparing both the stories overall points of the story are focused from that it is found that, both stories have many things in common when it comes to analyzing race.

Discussion

The two of the poems I found myself fascinated with are “The Welcome Table” by Walker and “What it's like to be a Black Girl” by a talented poet Smith. These two poems talk about the pride of each of the author's cultures and races. The authors do not want to make excuses for being the way they are but want to tell about the pride they feel for being the way they are, and they found no way to change themselves, but that history has made show them the way they are. The Smith and Morale's are great poets of their time, and they have contributed a lot for the society, and their respective communities (Walker, 2007, 40).

Themes of the Poems

In the poem, with title of “What It's Like to be a Black Girl” and “The Welcome Table” by Walker have discussed the racial discrimination and injustice caused by the White people with Blacks. They both talk about pride in their heritage, and at the same time, these poems are about the anger towards a new culture that does not seem to be understood in the fact that culture is different by nature. The authors want people to learn how to live with them and each other in spite of the differences of race and culture. I found many similarities in their poems.
