The story Monkey celebrate Monkey is essentially an allegory of Monkey and Tripitaka's journey. A figural contrast between Monkey and Tripitaka thus pervades the journey to the West. It is Monkey, nor Tripitaka, who comes to act with real discernment and real compassion: Tripitaka bears the name "Zen Spirit,” but Monkey is Zen Spirit in action. Monkey, not Tripitaka, emerges as teacher and guide (Albert 1993). He invokes the Heart Sutra to recall the quest to the benighted Tripitaka, vanquishes demons, works cures, and repeatedly rescues both his own companions and others they meet along the way.

Question 2 Why does Tripitaka get angry with Monkey for killing the thieves?

If Tripitaka shows no spiritual progress on his journey, it is because in the light of that philosophy he is the embodiment of fearful self-consciousness forever enslaved by phenomena and therefore forever incapable of reaching that peace of mind which alone can rout the terror of the senses. This true nature of makes Tripitaka get angry with Monkey for killing the thieves.

By extension, this period got the name of the Enlightenment. One wave of this movement was to the east, through China and Korea to Japan, the other to the north, through Tibet to Mongolia (Albert 1993).
