Abstract

In this research paper, an attempt is made to highlight the pertinent literature that is available on the pressing issue of long term mental health consequences of child physical abuse. The paper also covers the aspect of emotional child abuse as well with special reference to the relevant situation in the United Kingdom. A review of the literature on this topic is done in order to analyze the root causes and consequences of child physical and mental abuse. The discussion is aimed at the current situation of this problem in the United Kingdom and its severe consequences on the health of the affected children.

CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION AND RATIONALE

Background

There are a number of issues that take place in this world. Some of them are preventable, while some cannot be prevented easily. These issues are undesirable and therefore there is a need to cope with them. One of such issues is the child abuse, both physical and emotional. Children are the beauty of this world and demand love form others, especially those who are around them. Physical and mental abuse of children and ignorance are the factors that have very severe consequences on the health of the child from mental perspective. Such children feel these consequences for a very long-term, perhaps lifelong in most of the cases. Such children tend to be left behind in their life.

Child abuse is defined as the emotional or physical mistreatment of a child, or negligence towards a child. A more detailed definition of child abuse is that it is any action or actions committed either by parents or by someone who is responsible for caring of a child that result in any sort of harm or threat to that child. It is an issue that usually takes place at the home of the child, at the school or any community in which the interaction of the child with others take place.

Physical abuse is the type of child abuse that involves physical aggression towards the child by any adult person. The child may receive scratches, wounds, burns, broken bones and such physical damages as a result of physical abuse. Most of the countries that have developed laws to counter this problem consider such acts that can cause any sort of harm to a child to be illegal.
