Local District Policies

Introduction

The East Baton Rouge Parish School System strives to achieve an advanced learning environment which enhances the critical development of students consistent with their needs, and abilities, while increasing the economic, social, and cultural life of a diverse community reaching the highest levels of ethical and professional behavior (West dale Middle School, Baton Rouge, LA). The East Baton Rouge School District has policies in a position to concentrate on bullying and school violence, absenteeism, finance, use of technology and school safety.

School Safety

It is the responsibility of management to guarantee the security and safety of the students and staff; the EBRPSS enforces and maintains an elevated state of security throughout the system. All actions that the law allows are implemented, in order to guard the rights and lives of the entire staff and students. Schools are known as a safe place for teachers to teach, and students to learn. According to policies, it is the responsibility of the experienced instructors, who act in the place of parents, to supervise the students with care and ensure their security in every conceivable way (Essex, 2008).

Every student has a lawful right to receive a quality education at public expense and to achieve personal goals by participating in programs that school carries out. It is the responsibility for every student to be on time and to attend all the classes each day, and to complete all the class assignments, assigned to them. Students must obey school rules, district rules and all school employees. Students with disabilities have certain rights, which may affect the School System's suspension and expulsion determinations with regard to placement and site of educational services.

Absenteeism

Students may be excused by the principal for the whole or a part of a day any student absent for two or more consecutive school days due to personal illness, a chronic illness or death in the student's immediate family. The leave must not surpass one week. In case of any natural disaster, the leave should not exceed five days (La. R.S.17:226).

Students granted excused absences shall be allowed to make up any school work which was missed. Regular attendance in school, as provided by law, is required of all students. In compliance with the purpose and intent of the compulsory Attendance Law, absences, which result from an out-of-school suspension will not count toward loss of credit, and the absences are excused as a matter of statutory law (MS. L. TAYLOR (n.d).

These policies are communicated to parents, students and staff through the use of the student handbook. The Student Rights & Responsibilities Handbook is produced annually. A handbook package is distributed to the students at the beginning of each school year. The student is expected to bring the packet to parents or guardians for evaluation.
