Introduction

This paper intends to discuss the basic components of logistic management along with the major ICT systems in each component of logistics. Moreover, the paper will also provide a critical analysis of benefits and challenges in adopting and applying new technologies in companies. The logistic systems have been changed immensely in recent years depicting the growth and adaptation in the use of ICT systems. The major ICT systems used in this aspect are GPS or GIS transport management system and warehouse management systems. The utilization of such systems has enabled the companies to manage their supply chains in a more efficient manner. The purpose of this paper is to make the reader aware about the significance of logistics management and also to focus on the major ICT systems in each component of logistics.

Discussion

The logistics management is basically seen as the procedure of planning and implementing the efficient and effective flow and storage of products, services and even information from the origin point to the consumption point. This process makes sure that the requirements of the customer are meeting fully and there is no discrepancy in this context. Logistics management is also known by some other names like business logistics, supply chain management, materials management and many others. The system of transportation is also considered important from the perspective of managing logistics. The efficient transportation system assures the efficiency of getting the products moved from one place to another. The relationship between the logistics and transportation is significant and the transportation plays a vital role in the logistics systems for improving the business processes (Dan & Nada, 2010 Pp. 250-280).

The ICT systems basically refer to the information communication systems which facilitate the flow of information and communicating it electronically. The working of ICT systems is difficult to understand. ICT system works with the help of internal and external networks. From the viewpoint of logistics management systems, the efficient utilization of ICT systems is extremely important for the purpose of maintaining the flow of information, goods and services effectively. ICT systems need to be efficiently managed within organizations. The value of information, its limitations and the availability to personnel along with the management of information are important things that are considered while developing the information systems strategy for logistics department within any organization (Nigel, Stuart & Robert, 2009 Pp. 120-175).

Key Components of Logistics Management

The logistics management systems are dependent on various components whose working makes the logistics management efficient and effective. The basic components of logistics management system are information systems, infrastructure or resources and logistics services. The most important among the components of the logistic systems is assumed to be the information system and it also depend upon various components like purchasing information system, inventory controlling, sales information system, management information system and many others (Robert, 2003 PP. 100-125).
