M4A1 Paper: Communication Conflict Analysis

Introduction

In medical care, the lack of team work or the lack of coordination leads to the failure of not being able to provide effective care. Historically nurses have adopted classical principles administrative, to manage their work, with a view to structuring and organization of nursing service in health institution. We live in a period of historic change, where old answers are inadequate to the new realities. The current discourse consists of delegation of powers, alliances, teams, involvement, partnerships, negotiations, and exploitation of human motivation. Administrators maintain contact with several people who have values, knowledge, beliefs, principles and the different goals conflicts arise as the result of living at work (Brinkert, 2010, pp.145-156).

Discussion

There was one instance where I faced a conflict in my organization. There was a patient who was hospitalized after receiving a stroke. She protracted a right hemiplegia and experienced stained speech. Before she had got the stroke, she could not walk without help, and look after herself on her own. The speech therapist assessed her, and recommended that the feeding her orally had to be stopped because of her dysphagia, in order to lessen the chance of aspiration. During the visiting time, her husband came to visit her, and as she was faltering for food, he decided to give her rice. I passed by the patient's bed, and instantly prevented him from feeding his wife and also told him that it was the decision of the doctor not to do so. Nevertheless, I had not finished giving the complete instructions, and I got distracted by the other tasks that had to be done on an immediate basis.

After one hour, when I returned I saw the husband trying to feed his wife. Again I stopped him from, but he was reluctant to listen to me and claimed that I was trying to starve his wife. The husband was very sentimental, and became angry as I tried to clarify the situation, and threatened to take action against me. At that moment, I walked away from the incident, and made an account of the whole episode. The conflict that happened that day can be categorized as an interpersonal conflict, as we held different views on the patient's state. In this case the two main issues were the variations in perceptions of the husband and me, and the lack of communication between us which lead to the conflict (Almost, 2006, pp.444-453).

As it can be seen from the situation and other clinical scenarios there are many conflicts because there are differences in perceptions between the health care professional and clients. It is important to note that the patient's family had a different view on her condition than the other health care practitioners. Her family was a little too hopeful, and he still thought that she was full of energy although she was bed ridden and suffered from a critical physical disability.
