Introduction

Learning Disability

A learning disability is a disorder in understanding or using spoken or written language. Learning disabilities are disorders that can affect a person's ability to acquire, understand, organize, store or use verbal and nonverbal information. These Learning disorders affect individuals who have level of average intelligence or above average. They affect both children and adults and often boys more than girls. Learning disabilities are defined as a group of neurological disorders that manifest themselves differently and to varying degrees in each person. What they have in common, although the pace of development of each child is different, is that it usually occur in the first years of life and may persist into adulthood.

Individuals with learning disabilities may have average or even above-average intelligence but experience problems with reading, writing, listening, speaking, concentration, as well as doing arithmetic and statistic calculation. There are names specified to each learning disability. Learning disabilities are divided into categories that include physical problems and mental problems. Although in many cases with unknown causes of learning problems, experts believe they are the result from an abnormality in the structure and functioning the brain or central nervous system.

Discussion

This report focuses on mental health issues and the client group I am focusing on is children students studying educational institutes and are facing issues due to their learning disability.

This is so if we take the case of Dyslexia which is a type of learning disability that involves difficulty with reading. There are many reasons why children may not be able to learn. Problems with respect to learning disability does not include mental retardation, lack of motivation, attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity disorder, autism, or hard of hearing, vision or emotional. (Raskind, 1999, page 35-50)

If a child has difficulty learning to read, write or calculate, does not mean he is not intelligent. This difficulty may be due to a learning disability. According to Department of Education United Kingdom, more than one child in six (17.5 percent) have some learning problem that is associated to reading during the first three years at school. Currently, 2.8 million students in public schools in the United Kingdom are being served with special education due to learning problems.

Some factors that may cause or influence these learning disabilities are:

Heredity or genetics. Learning disabilities typically affect members of the same family. Problems during pregnancy or childbirth. The following situations in relation to problems that occur during pregnancy or childbirth that may contribute to have learning problems includes illness or injury during or before birth, drug use or alcohol during pregnancy, premature delivery or long lack of oxygen or low birth weight.

Problems after birth. Injury head, malnutrition, poisoning Lead and child abuse can cause some learning disability.

Risk factors for learning disabilities include
