Introduction

In a global setting, strategic analysis and market expansion includes competition in firms across national borders with various national home bases. This paper radiates the profile of Giraffe Restaurants. Giraffe Restaurants is a UK restaurant and café chain under the umbrella of three different brands; Giraffe, Burgers & Cocktails & Giraffe Stop. The subject of discussion for this study is Burger & Cocktails. This UK based food company can make market expansion to either China or India.

The study is bifurcated into three sections. The first section talks about the comparative analysis of doing business in India and China. Porter's diamond model is used to determine the competitive advantage. The next section examines and recommends market strategies for India as best possible alternative. The last section provides implications for this study. Different marketing strategies and value chain models were used to evaluate stratagems and approaches for the company to best fit in the Indian culture of burger chains.

Competitive Advantage: India or China?

Historical Background

Decisive events are part of journey of India and China during the mid of 20th century. Historically, Indian got its independence from the colonial British Raj in 1947. China experienced a proletarian revolution under the leadership of Mao Zedong in 1949. Both countries, communist China and democratic India, embark ambitious development in technology, economy and science (Chen, 1971, pp. 5). This was possible through centralization of planning and self reliance through local initiative. These countries have received influx of foreign capital, intervention in public policy and technological enhancement over last three decades.

Comparative Analysis

Large population and low income were common problems for the reticent beginnings of India and China. Since their independence and over the last decade of the 20th century, India and China have climbed their economic development. The low cost base of both countries was the integral reason behind the growth. The roadmap charted by these countries was utterly different. Manufacturing sector thrived Chinese economy and had a head start over India. Accelerated growth in services boosted India's economy. They had a good score on talented management, efficient human resource, cultural affinity, regulatory environment and transparent work system (Winters & Yousuf, 2007).

Giraffe Restaurants

The external analysis of India and China can structure a preamble to examine UK business opportunities in these emerging economies. Giraffe Restaurants was founded in Hampstead under the supervision of Russel Joffe, Andrew Jacobs and Juliette Joffe (Walsh, 2006). They owe active responsibility in monitoring daily operational business activities. They wanted to create personification from Giraffe to view the world with their heights.
