Strategic Planning

Strategic planning and strategic management are an interwoven parts of each other. Strategic planning defines where an organization is now and where it wants to be? What an organization has to achieve and how to go about achieving it? As all the organizations differs from one and other in one respect or other, it follows that the strategic planning of every organization is different and unique to its distinct characteristics (Steiner, 2010).

An organizational goal of any college or university is to attract a large chunk of students from the marketplace. A college or university forms their strategy in such a way that it helps them to attract students in the market. For this, some of the steps that colleges or university can incorporate in their strategy are improving curriculum, providing students with a wide variety from which to select core and major courses, hiring trained teachers who give every student attention and are cooperative and attentive. To add extracurricular classes as well as sports, drama club, writing club etc. In order to an attract a large chunk of students from the market, universities can open more departments in it so that it can offers every degree and program and are not just engineering or business specialized. All the department must excel in their area, and they continuously gives excellence education.the strategic planning of the college depends on the goals og the college. As when the goals are clear, we can formulate our strategy in a way that helps us in achieving those goals.These goals provides guideline in making the strategy of the organizations, as when a comprehensive strategy is followed, the goals of the organizations will be met effectively.

Planning in today's world has changed a lot compared to planning twenty five years ago, now days organization have become more complex than ever, and there is a constant change in the external factors that can affect the organizational goal in short and long term. In the past, strategic plans were always made by top management, consultants or central planning departments. In the case of crisis, decentralization was done, where managers at all level were involved in decision making (Draft et al. 2010).

Planning in today's organization is more complex and asks for complex solutions and risk assessment; this is due to the increase in number of departments and vast amount of work load. Organization now days are planning more as the external environments are changing rapidly, so that the organizational goal achievement are not disturbed, organizational planning includes setting stretch goals for excellence, performance dashboards and organizing intelligence teams. Crisis is now a regular part of organizations as there is a continual change in the environmental factors that are, economy, and technology, social and natural factors.
