Introduction

The formulation of strategies in production and operations planning in an organization lead it towards maintaining its competitiveness in the market. Operations management helps the organization in planning and scheduling its operations and production facilities in order to survive and compete in the market and attain its objectives. The operations manager holds the responsibility to maintain and organise its resources and utilize them efficiently and effectively to strive for attaining its objectives in the market. This paper deals with the importance of the position of operational manager in meeting the Business objectives of the organization. It discusses the achievement of operational efficiency required for the improvement of safety, reduction in time and cost, controlling quality and managing the compliance issues within the organization. The application of strategic management in managing operations department and suggestion for an operational system are provided. The integration of efficiency, effectiveness, economic use of resources, challenges in achieving customer service and key performance objectives are discussed.
