Mass Communication

Introduction

Communication is a process of sending and receiving messages with some meaning attached to it. The main elements of a communication process includes sender as a source, communication medium and a receiver. The sender encodes a meaningful message; the receiver decodes the message and perceives it. After receiving the message, it depends on the receiver whether he/ she want to respond to it or not. The medium of communication is a way through which messages are communicated from one person to another.

It is important to understand that when two people communicate with each other, two things are to be considered. Firstly, the communication needs to be accurate. Secondly, when an effective communication occurs, it means that the receiver has successfully perceived the message in the right way. These two issues have led to two different incidents in the workplace in which the outcome was both negative and positive.

In simple words, mass communication is a process or a medium through which information is distributed which can be relevant or irrelevant to a large group of population. However, how this communication to a large group is handled and how will this mass communication will affect the group of people if used inappropriately is the question that is not easy to understand and comprehend.

For these questions and many others related to Mass Communication, T. Barton Carter, Juliet Lushbough Dee and Harvey L Zuckman wrote a book named “The Mass Communication Law in a Nutshell Shell” which deals with all the laws and policies related to Mass communication and how it should be used through media or any other channel.

However, the Following pages will only discuss on the third and fourth chapter of the Book “Mass Communication in a Nutt Shell”. These chapters discuss the creation of common law that relates to the Mass Communication and how and when these laws should be followed, furthermore the appropriateness of data that is to be distributed is also discussed in these chapter. How and where obscene expression is to be applied and at how much detail is also the main theme of these chapters. These chapters also discuss the limitations that are made against the information and data distributed through mass communication and how the classic case of Miller v\s California proceeded in making new regulations and laws that are used to control, and oversee the usage of mass communication throughout the world. Other material topics discussed in this chapter are the rights to distribute data through Mass Communication and what nature of data and information is acceptable through Mass communication.
