Introduction

Mathew Arnold took birth at Laleham on the Thames. He was the eldest son of his parents. Mathew Arnold started his careers as a poet; he was recognized as a student at the Rugby School. His father was nationally acclaimed as a strict and innovative teacher at his school. Mathew Arnold completed his college studies from Balliol College, Oxford University. Subsequent to the completion of his undergraduate degree, in 1844, he went back to Rugby as a teacher of Classics. In 1851, he got married and then he started working as a government school inspector. This position provided him an opportunity to explore England and the continent. During his thirty five years of this service, Arnold developed his interest in education which fed into his critical works along with his poetry. In 1857, Arnold was offered a position of Professor of Poetry, which he accepted and rendered his services till 1867. Mathew Arnold was the first professor to lecture in English instead of Latin. Throughout this time, several renowned critical works were written by Arnold (Laurence, pp.1).

Life of Matthew Arnold

According to Nicholas Murray, Arnold was a fine poet, who was criticized when his talent of versification failed him. Arnold was greatly inspired by his father, Thomas Arnold. He was an emerged shadow of his father, Legendary Teacher of Rugby. Arnold spared time to write the works and expressing his concern for culture, where people are highly separated from everyone and social and personal values reflect materialism. His writing that shows his concern for culture reflects his attachment with everyone. On the other hand, his previous writings portray him as separated from everyday concern. Nicholas Murray writes and shows his great fondness and understanding about verse of Arnold. He is capable of making sense of writings of Arnold on education and culture, and even apologetic for the religious works which considered out of step by contemporaries of Arnold, termed as irrelevant by later generations. Matthew Arnold died in Liverpool, in 1888 (Laurence, pp.1).

Achievements of Mathew Arnold

Arnold completed his education at Winchester: rugby, where he achieved a prize for his poem of “Alaric at Rome”. In 1841, he was sent to Oxford as a Scholar of Balliol College. There, he won the Newdigate Prize for “Cromwell, A prize Poem” also he got a Second Class in Litterea Humaniores. Arnold had not yet disclosed the hidden basis of thought and of austerity in him, which was reflected in his poems.

In the year 1845, subsequent to a short break of teaching at Rugby, he was selected Fellow of Oriel, and he achieved a great distinction at Oxford. In 1847, he became private secretary to Lord Lansdowne, who was responsible for securing Arnold an inspectorship of school, in 1851.
