Unit Question 2: Deconstructing Matrix of a newspaper

The news I have taken to in this paper is about the e-paper devices which were competing to become the iPod of the newspaper business. It was published on April 24th 2006, in New York Times. It was the front page headline. I am a resident of the New York City. Following is above the fold picture on the front page.

Concepts of the matrix

The headline of the paper is One Day Soon, Straphangers May Turn Pages with a Button. The picture has an e-paper device with news in French on it. The picture shows that the device is having news electronically and is assuming that the device can flip on pages by pressing a button. The headline has the main focus on straphangers that they are the one who would use this device. Following is the description in relation with the concepts.

All media are constructions. This concept talks about the relation between the picture and the headline. The headline does not mention that it is talking about an e-paper device. It has only mentioned the straphangers that they may soon be turning pages with a button. On the other hand, the picture does not show any straphanger.

The media construct reality. The second concept discusses the mood and perspective of the picture in what way it is supporting the story of the headline. The story tells that soon, they are about to launch an e-paper device, especially for straphangers, so that they would be turning pages of the news by pressing a button. The picture is created with the concept of technology. It shows the device with news on it, having a news paper behind such that it shows that news on the paper can be seen on the device, as well.

Audiences negotiate meaning in the media. Other people surrounds me also think of the relation between the picture and headline the way I do. Few people can comprehend the real story behind the picture by only looking at it. However, most of the people cannot judge the story by only looking at the picture. They have to see the deadline.

Media have commercial implications. The picture is showing a French newspaper, which is advantageous for that paper. However, it does not negatively affect any advertisers.
