Introduction

Art work has always been praised by the people, whether its painting or buildings. The skyscrapers at present are though engineering at the one end, whereas, it also represents the art and culture of the country. The Eiffel Tower of Paris, for example, has become the global icon for France. Similarly, Burj al Arab is the global icon of Dubai. Different tools are used to interpret images and meanings from them. Scholars often use these tools without considering the dynamics of images (Sturken & Cartwright, p.68). Most images hold aesthetic and social conventions. Conventions are like road signs, and it is mandatory to learn their codes in order to make sense, and the codes people learn become their second nature. Company logos operate according to this principle of instant recognition, counting on the fact that the denotative meaning (the swoosh equals Nike) will slide into connotative meanings (the swoosh means quality, coolness) that will boost sales. Images decode interpreting clues that point to intended, unintended, and even merely suggested meanings (Porter 1993, pp. 12-46). These clues may be formal elements such as colour. These may also include shades of black and white, tone, contrast, composition, and depth (Berger, p. 24). In this connection, this study will analyse five different landmarks famous all over the world for uniqueness, including Bank of China Towers (Hong Kong), Sydney Opera House, Taj Mahal, Eiffel Tower and Burj al Arab.
