Impacts and Issues Relevant to Sporting Mega Events

Introduction

Mega sporting events have helped in enhancing a country's revenue stream to a significant level. This has ultimately become the primary reason for promoting mega sporting events as it significantly enhances the opportunity of economic return through tourism, infrastructural development and job creation etc. (Griesback, J. 2013)[i]. However, other side of the picture is highly daunting and depressing as organisers of mega sporting events are continuously confronted with several issues. These issues range from cost overruns to social problems. This ultimately encourages asking questions like: whose interests are these mega sporting events serving and how? This question has become critically important to be analysed because of the fact that these events are taking places at the expense of organisers. Furthermore, host countries are provided with several opportunities to enhance its overall economic growth, but it seems that host countries have focused entirely upon short-term profits rather than creating a long-lasting social legacy.
