Mentoring is a one to one relationship based on encouragement, constructive comments, openness, mutual trust, respect and willingness to learn and share. This relationship is established between a more experienced employee (sometimes a supervisor but not necessarily) and a less experienced employee (a student, for example). The mentor is a model, a motivator and a counselor for the student. It shall in particular:

- Assist students to set career goals and long-term learning goals in the short term;

- To help students understand the organizational culture;

- Recommending and / or create learning opportunities;

- Transfer knowledge in areas such as communication, critical thinking, responsibility, flexibility and teamwork;

- Make constructive feedback on strengths and areas for development;

- To answer questions;

- Provide advice on matters of personal nature such as finding an apartment for students from outside the city;

- Be available to help students find jobs after their studies are completed.

Although they are often different in their personality or their management, mentors have a lot in common. A good mentor:

- Is an established employee;

- Includes the organization and its culture;

- Is available and ready to spend time with the student to give guidance and appropriate feedback;

- Glad to help others;

- Is open-minded

- Is flexible, comprehensive and challenging;

- Knows very well communicated;

- Stimulates thinking and student reflection.
