Introduction

The Ming was a period of economic growth and cultural splendor in which they were the first contacts between China and Western powers, specifically with Portugal in the sixteenth century and with the East India Company, the West India Company of England in the seventeenth century and later, in the eighteenth century, mercantilist intervention which bear fruit in opening the Chinese market (Boorstin, 1983). Indeed, trade with the Western powers and Japan, the Ming tried to stop for a long time, lead to a commoditization of society similar to what had occurred during the Song Dynasty.
