Introduction

The state of Mississippi is considered as one of the deepest South state of the United States. The state of Mississippi is located in the Eastern South Central part of the United States. Out of the 50 states of the United States the state of Mississippi is considered as the 32nd in size. The state of Mississippi is spread over an area of about 123,514 square kilometres. Out of these 123,514 sq Km, 122,333 sq km is comprised of land and 1,181 sq km is comprised of inland water. From the Northern side the state of Mississippi is bordered with Tennessee. In the eastern side of the state Alabama is located. On South there is Gulf of Mexico and on the west side there is state of Louisiana and Arkansas. There are a number of small islands that lie off the coast (infoplease.com, 2012).

What was the area before it became a state

It was after the period of 1699, when the first settlements of Europeans were observed in Mississippi. The first settlement of Europeans can be observed by their establishment of a French Colony on Biloxi Bay. This settlement of French grew in 1718 when this colony came under the rule of the French Mississippi company. Mississippi was first colonized by the Spanish, but annexed by the United Kingdom under the terms of the Treaty of Paris. With the independence of the Thirteen Colonies, the region of the Mississippi became part of the newly created United States of America (infoplease.com, 2012).
